Busy schedules this time of year can make it
hard to stick to an exercise routine, but here’s
some motivation to get you to lace up your
sneaks and start moving: A study conducted
at Indiana University in Bloomington found that by taking a
walk you can counteract the negative effects of a fatty meal
on your arteries. “Eating high-fat foods breaks down the
endothelium—the layer of cells that is largely responsible
for preventing heart disease—in your arteries,” says Janet
Wallace, Ph.D., professor of kinesiology at the university and
coauthor of the study. But if you go walking after the meal
your arteries not only recover but also actually get stronger.
Try the workout plan below at least five days a week a
couple of hours after eating. Think of it as a heart-healthy
gift you’re giving to yourself (as well as redemption for
indulging in an extra slice of pecan pie).
