and tired during the day and sweaty at night. Sometimes my body would
completely reject a food that had always been part of my diet. When I’d
have an inexplicable bout of diarrhea after eating with friends, I’d joke that
my belly was just “growing opinionated.” Feeling stressed from job-hunting
probably wasn’t helping either. I assumed that once I found work and
caught up on sleep I’d recover. Besides, I didn’t have time to see a doctor.
Weeks later, when I noticed a spot of blood in the toilet—and then even
more red droplets over the next few days—I finally found the time. Whatever
